Famous faces from the world of film and television made an appearance in Wirksworth on Monday – as the town hosted its annual carnival.
Revellers got involved with this year’s film and television theme and Star Wars characters, Doctor Who, 101 Dalmatians, Men in Black and The Wizard of Oz were among the well-known faces in the procession .
Organiser Chris Booth said the rain did not dampen spirits and visitors and residents turned out in force to watch the parade.
He added: “Considering the rain was coming down lots of people were on the floats and I think the day was helped by having Titan the robot. There was a break in the rain and he put on a show then he did an extra show at the end of the day.
“There was quite a big gathering on the streets and many, many people dressed up.”
Celebrations kicked off on Saturday with the blessing of the wells and the crowning of this year’s carnival royalty.
Monday saw a procession of colourfully decorated floats and people in fancy dress parade through the town to the recreation ground for a packed programme of entertainment.
Main attraction – Titan – has recently been performing with JLS on their last UK tour and has appeared on many television shows.
Other attractions on the field included the Bonsall Red Barrows, a wrestling display, a dog show, children’s rides and stalls.
Earlier in the year organisers feared this would be the last carnival due to a lack of support, but thanks to donations from businesses in the town and sponsorship from Derbyshire County Council the carnival’s future is secure.
Chris said: “We are now hoping to put on more gigs throughout the year to raise more funds.
“It would be such a loss to the Wirksworth community if it went after it has been going for 125 years.”
