It’s that time of year again, when we invite you to honour our community heroes.
We are launching our New Year Honours Awards for 2012 – and calling on you to nominate our unsung stars.
Many people across the town work tirelessly for the benefit of others and we are giving you the chance to name those you believe deserve special recognition.
We will be presenting our winners with certificates at a ceremony in Matlock’s Imperial Rooms on January 6.
There is no age limit to those you can nominate and their good deeds can be anything from helping at a local club, encouraging eco campaigns and raising funds for charity to fetching the shopping for a neighbour or caring for a sick relative.
If you know someone who has gone the extra mile for the community – let us know.
Mercury editor Amanda Hatfield, said: “The role of the Mercury is to speak up for the silent majority who are too modest to push themselves forward.
“There are many unsung heroes across our community who deserve some recognition for all their hard work.”
In the Mercury each week we print articles about generous people who are raising funds for charity or doing their bit for others and the area.
This week we have featured the Do Something Different Club on page six – which is run by three dedicated volunteers and supports elderly and disabled people in Matlock.
They are just one example of the many we see through the year.
Last year’s winners included Tom Pilkington, who is a stalwart of the Matlock Boys Brigade, dedicated care assistant Jane Dodds and Peter Woodward who helped save Cromford post office.
We will be printing a coupon in next week’s Mercury but to enter your heroes this week send their name and contact details on the back of an envelope, along with the reason you are nominating them to New Year Honours 2012, the Matlock Mercury, 4 Firs Parade, DE4 3AS. Don’t forget to include your name, address and contact number too.
Nominations must be in by Monday, December 19.
Following the presentation ceremony we will be printing a full list of award winners and pictures from the event.
