Tortoise taken from Matlock

PoLice have seized a tortoise from a Matlock home.

The rare animal was confiscated from a woman who is alleged to have smuggled it into the country in her hand luggage as she returned from Tunisia.

The spur–thighed tortoise, which is also known as a Greek tortoise, was seized with the assistance of the National Wildlife Crime Unit.

The tortoise has the highest level of protection from export, import and sale as it is an endangered species.

It is an offence to export and import endangered species like this without proper documentation.
