Two Dales took the strain last weekend, as visitors pulled in from across the country for a major tug-of-war event.

It was the first competition in the area for several years, and the first time the Two Dales club have hosted an English Tug of War Association meeting.

Some of the sport’s top performers were in attendance at the Plough Inn on Sunday May 24.

Club spokesman Charlie Village said: “We’re honoured to host this competition. It’s a great opportunity for members of the public to see some of the best tug of war athletes in the world competing against each other.

“It’s great that so many people have come out to cheer on their local team and maybe even getting inspired to have a go themselves.”

In its long and storied history, the Two Dales club have represented England at UK and European championships. The membership is currently seeing a resurgence and teams enjoyed the opportunity to tug against pullers who have won medals at World Championships.

The competition was divided into pulls by weight class. Men’s teams tipped the scales at 600, 640 and 680 kilograms and catchweight, while women’s and youth teams faced off in 520 and 580 kilogram categories.

Organiser Alec Neville said: “On behalf of Two Dales I’d like to thank all the teams and officials who made the event such a success. Special mention should go to Felton Eccles and Raunds clubs who have travelled from Somerset and Northamptonshire.”

The Two Dales club will compete at the national championships in Yeovil on Saturday June 20. Fore more information, visit the group’s Facebook page at http://on.fb.me/1FcZUqJ.
