Volunteer drivers wanted to run a charity group

An INITIATIVE to tackle loneliness amongst older people is wanting volunteers to run a group in Bakewell.

Contact the Elderly helps relieve the isolation of people over 75-years-old by organising free afternoon tea parties one Sunday a month for small groups.

The charity needs at least two more volunteer drivers to take older guests to and from the tea parties, as well as a couple of volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their home for tea, talk and companionship.

Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and a home with easy access and a downstairs toilet. All drivers need is a car, full driving licence and a few spare hours on one Sunday a month.

Mary, 91, has been a regular at the Bakewell tea parties for two years.

“It’s just the joy of meeting up with a group you know and getting out amongst people your own age. The tea parties keep me going,” she said. To volunteer phone 01535 632592 or email mary.robinson@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
