Watch the Birdie competition winners announced

Congratulations to Leigh Pugh who has won our Watch The Birdie competition with his fantastic picture of a perching swallow.

Leigh of Bank Gardens, Matlock, took the picture at Hartington last spring.

The contest was extremely difficult to judge with so many fantastic entries but the judges, Mercury editor Amanda Hatfield, and John Purdon from Nose 2 Tail pet shop, were unanimous that this snap was spot on.

The two runner-up prizes go to Carole Hall, of The Hill, Cromford for managing to actually capture a picture of a cuckoo (right) and to 14-year-old Laurie Butler, of Church Street, Bonsall. He took this picture of a waxwing on at door at his school Anthony Gell in Wirksworth.

He says the bird was sitting on the door while hundreds of students were running around. A flock of them were in the school grounds for a day before flying on somewhere else.

The winner will receive a £20 voucher from Nose 2 Tail and the runners up a £10 voucher each.
