The youngest ever mayor has been elected to lead Matlock Town Council.

Peter Wildgoose, 23, took over the reigns as chairman of the council from Barry Hopkinson after being elected by his fellow members.

Cllr Wildgoose lives in Matlock and is assistant manager at the Tavern in Tansley.

He attended Tansley Primary School and Highfields School.

Cllr Wildgoose first got involved with the council last year after speaking with Cllr Hopkinson about an issue to do with Cavendish Fields.

“He said ‘well do something about it’ and I did,” he remembered.

“I saw it as a good chance to help out in the community, learn about the community and make a difference.”

In becoming mayor, Cllr Wildgoose is following in the footsteps of his mother, Pat Wildgoose, who held the position in 1996.

He said: “I have always been outspoken and always wanted to make some sort of difference and this is the best way to start.”

Before passing over the mayorial chain, Cllr Hopkinson handed out some cheques to his chosen charities for the year.

He gave a cheque for £1,500 to Talking to Minds, a charity set up to help people suffering from post Traumatic stress disorder.

He also handed Ashgate Hospice a cheque for £1,300, making his total contribution to them more than £2,000.

Cllr Hopkinson also presented his nominated cadet for the year, Lance Corporal Morgan Abbotts – who had the role of attending selected functions with the mayor throughout his year in office – with a plaque.

Cllr Wildgoose named his chosen charity for the year as the Hallam P3 unit, which is part of Hallam Hospital.

He chose the charity because his school friend Gavin Webster was treated there for cancer.

“He was one of my mates through school.” he explained.

“He got cancer and they looked after him there before he sadly passed away. I thought I wanted to give something back to them.”

Cllr Wildgoose’s cadet was named as Corporal Yasmine Gratton.

Anyone interested in joining the Matlock Army Cadets is urged to visit them at their base in Hurst Rise, Matlock on Mondays or Thursdays between 7pm and 9pm.
