A NEWLY-formed group of Matlock residents have launched a petition and website in protest against a "monstrous" footbridge which has been constructed near their homes.
The Matlock Footbridge Campaign have slammed both the scale and design of the new footbridge linking Matlock Train Station and the new Sainsbury's store.

Snitterton Road resident Isabella Stone, spokesperson for the campaign group, said those signing the petition would be able to call for a range of measures including a complete re-design, relocation - or scrapping of the bridge altogether.

Mrs Stone said: "The petition will allow residents and visitors to Matlock to register their anger that such a monstrosity has been built in an attractive and historic part of town.

"They will also be able to choose between a number of options as to what to do about the bridge, from keeping it where it is but re-designing it, to scrapping it altogether and locating the railway crossing somewhere else.

"We are encouraging anyone who would like to show their support for the campaign, or to get involved, to come to the launch on Thursday November 15."

The footbridge was built by Sainsbury's to provide pedestrian and wheelchair access to the new superstore at Cawdor Quarry.

Residents have been critical of the design of the bridge, which doubles back on itself to allow for a more gently-sloped incline ramp.

The design was determined by the requirements of both Network Rail and disabled access legislation, but campaigners say these restrictions made it "inappropriate" to locate the bridge adjacent to the Victorian railway station and Grade II listed station house.

A launch event will take place on Thursday November 15 between 5.45 and 6.45pm at the Imperial Rooms, Matlock, for the petition's website, www.matlockfootbridge.org.uk.

The group will also be gathering signatures in the town at various times.

So how are people going to get to sainsburys when you rip the bridge down? Not everybody has a car and if you put the bridge in the new car park it makes the pedestrian access considerably further away from the town centre. I think the location of the bridge is perfect and it will be perfect for providing access to the other platform. Just box the underside in with stone and put new railings on it and it will be fine. People don't like change in Matlock but they moan about it been stuck in time. I wonder how many of the moaners actually originate from Matlock and can remember when the town used to be heaving with shoppers. We have to progress into the future if this town is to prosper again and the footbridge will do that. Take it away then people will drive to Sainsburys and not walk into town anymore. I find in usefull to shop in town then walk onto sainsburys. If you take it away or move it to the new car park I will not make the journey anymore.

Here Here! Scrapping that bridge is an idiotic idea!!! just change the design i.e. railings. The pergola is lovely and reminds me of a japnese garden especailly with the type of plants which have been planted down the walkway. When they have grown im sure it will be more lovely. It's just NIMBY Snitterton Road residents who are the whingers!.

I can't believe the group is advocating scapping the stucture or moving it further away from the town centre. It's clear common sense to keep it where it is where people can access the bus and train station post shopping. All the structure needs is a little thought and modification in design and it will be ok. I notice that somebody suggested a level crossing but how long will it be before someone is killed by a train. I think SQUASH is right in saying that the bridge will prove invaluable in providing access to the redundant platform in the future.

Get over it, the bridge is here to stay. Scrap it and watch your town centre die.

When will the Matlock Mercury wake up and realise that this is OLD news and actually give some credit to all those involved in bringing Sainsbury's to Matlock? Negative press week after week appears to be the staple diet of the Mercury who once again are pandering to the Snitterton Road Whingers. Go and take a look you for yourself, the Snitterton Road Whingers cannot even see the bridge unless they have the neck of a giraffe! Is it any wonder Matlock has stood still for the past two decades when any attempt to invigorate the town are met with such cynical attitudes. Look at the wider picture for once.

If this bridge is removed, how will people get to the other platform which Peak Rail are due to use sometime in the future? The bridge is apparently designed to Network Rail standards so don't blame Sainsbury's. Why not leave protest until the scheme the landscaping is finished. If not why not join others in the "Matlock timewarp" and join the Civic Association?

I agree, the bridge is absolutley fine, in fact as a Snitterton Road resident myself I find it very useful indeed. At the end of the day you've got your road closure at Salters Lane which is going to be made permanent soon so quit whinging. You now have a nice quiet road not being used as a rat run, no more Jehovas blocking the road 24/7, and easy access to the Supermarket!! Go figure!

You can hardly see much of the bridge as its tucked around the corner but the only thing I would comment on is the fact that your footsteps sound really loud so I do feel for the people who live in the Station House if you get loads of youths running and mucking about on it.

The bridge is great. I can go to sainsburys before work get a coffee and paper then go over the bridge to catch my train. It's in the best position that could be allowed. What a stupid idea to site it on the public carpark like some half baked individual suggested
