Passengers awaiting the launch of a new £20,000 river ferry are facing a long delay, with its official maiden voyage being put back by three months.
The Matlock Bath river ferry project was due to be opened in time for Easter and the May Bank Holidays, but problems with the ferry's operating mechanism have delayed the opening.

A district council spokeswoman said: "Obviously DDDC is disappointed that the ferry is not operable yet, but we are confident that it will be operating by the start of July, and be a key new visitor attraction within the Matlock Parks.

"The ferry will be one of only a few hand-operated chain ferries in this country: it is critical to make sure the boat operates correctly before the public can be taken on board," she added.

The council confirmed wheelchairs would not be allowed onboard.

The spokeswoman added: "The ramped access, with only two steps into the boat, will enable people with pushchairs to use the boat. However, the ferry is unable to accommodate wheelchair users."

The ferry is the final stage of the Matlock Parks Project.

I am rather surprised that they were allowed to build this ferry as it does not have disabled access.

Was that not the reason that Mumtaz were refused permission for their little tuc-tuc?

I'd heard that a condition of the grant was that the ferry was wheelchair accessible. I hope someone checks up on this.

I've seen the ferry, and I wonder exactly who will use it when the nearest footbridge across the river is mere minutes away. It will definitely be slower to cross using the ferry. Also, there will be a ferry toll - I can't imagine many people (apart from the odd tourist) who will fall for that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's a white elephant.
