Leading from Matlock along the A6 brings you into Darley Dale, passing Oker on the hillside which was the subject of a sonnet by William Wordsworth in 1829 about two boys going to war and only one returning.
One of the great Victorians, Sir Joseph Whitworth, wrote his name in the history books as a great industrialist.
He made his mark in Darley Dale by building the Whitworth Institute in 1890 and made Stancliffe Hall his home.

The Institute is steeped in history. In the first World War it was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers and during the second World War it was used by the army.
