MERCURY reader Sue Warner kindly submitted this excellent shot of the workforce at a Dales smelting factory, which she thinks was taken in about 1947.
At least 200 staff are pictured outside Firth Rixson Forgings on the A6 in Darley Dale.

The factory currently employs around 160 staff, having been forced into cutbacks during the credit crunch.

It is in a dispute with the district council over the noise its machinery produces.

But staff look cheery in this picture, which sees workers in oil-covered overalls standing side by side with their suited and booted managers.

Do you know what they were commemorating?
