Mindless vandals have repeatedly targeted the little train in Matlock's Hall Leys Park.

It must be so disheartening for the operator, when he is providing such a lovely service for children in the park.

The track has been ripped up, not only costing Norman Cummings hundreds of pounds but also depriving children of a very popular at
traction.

Hall Leys is an award-winning park and very well used, especially in the summer, when the grounds can be packed with families, Matlock residents and workers wanting a bit of peace and quiet.

A lot of hard work goes into the upkeep of the park and heartless hooligans have tried to ruin things, not only for children but for all the users who enjoy the park.

It is a shame certain people feel the need to go out of their way to cause such pointless destruction. It reflects a small section society who find entertainment in ruining things which bring enjoyment to others.

Only the other week vandals targeted a charity's prize-winning Venetian boat in Matlock Bath, causing much heartache to the volunteers who had put in time and effort to build the float.

It is disappointing, as these attractions are so popular and reflect the kind of community we live in. People are prepared to put in hard work to make things fun for others and many people turn out each year to see the illuminations or enjoy a stroll in the park.

Lack of police may be a problem but it is difficult to constantly police the actions of members of society who are without common morals.
It is also easy to blame youngsters – and they may be the culprits.

But we hear the same old tired excuses that there is nothing for them to do – and I'm not convinced this can justify such bad behaviour.
