In the same way that post offices are a vital amenity for older residents, a diverse, lively social scene is crucial for young people in rural towns and villages.

Being a young adult can be difficult in our area, with expensive housing and a fairly limited range of night-time entertainment.

The much-needed new affordable residential developments are a great step in the right direction.

It would be a great shame if younger generations continued to be drawn to Chesterfield, Sheffield or Derby in search of more vibrant nightlife, despite the new housing options.

In many places 3am is a typical time for many younger people to be out socialising on the weekends, and these needs should be catered for in Matlock.

Yet residents also have the right to a decent night's sleep, regardless of what night of the week it is.

There must be a compromise.

A combination of modern soundproofing and responsible ownership are important to keep all the noise and atmosphere where they should be, in the bar.

I hope many drinkers will offer some seasonal goodwill after kicking-out time this Christmas.
