In the Royle Family's festive special on TV Caroline Aherne's brilliant character Denise utters the line: "Christmas isn't really for children is it."
It's hilarious of course because we all know that the one thing which is important at this time of year is our children.
We all get a huge amount of pleasure from seeing the joy on the faces of youngsters throughout the season.
Not just as they
open presents on the big day but also when they are performing on stage in their school production or at church in the Christingle service.
It is moving to see them in awe as the tree lights are switched on and grinning with delight as they visit Santa's grotto.
How wonderful it was to see that Zack Roome was now well enough to have been able to go to Lapland and meet Father Christmas for himself.
Everyone who has met Zack knows he is a cheery little chap who has endured a lot in his life and if anyone deserves such a treat it is him.
This week's paper is also a celebration of all that is great about our young people and I am proud that this community champions them in so many ways.
Take a look at the happy smiling faces in the pictures from the school shows – well done to everyone who helped them sparkle on the day.
And special congratulations to all those children who have been honoured with Young Achiever Awards. The stories of what they have overcome to succeed can't fail to put a lump in your throat.
They are an inspiration to us all and should make us think twice before we moan simply because the queue is too long or it's raining outside.
There is so much criticism of young people today and they are blamed for many of the ills in our society. It is such a shame that so many talented, thoughtful and generous children are tarred with the brush of a minority in our community.
In 2009 I want this newspaper to be able to record all that is good about the young people who are our future. Make sure you let us know what you are doing so we can tell everyone else.
You deserve to have your efforts recognised and be congratulated every week.
Merry Christmas everyone and here's to a brilliant 2009.
