Children travelled back in time for a taste of Victorian school life.
Pupils from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, in Matlock, enjoyed a day of bygone activities from using slate and chalk to eating gruel at lunch-time and wearing the dunce’s hat.

They also took part in traditional Christmas crafts and made festive cards, a yule log and gift boxes.

Teacher, Moira Willmott, said the pupils had been learning about Victorian times and visited a workhouse in Sheffield which inspired them to have the themed day.

She added: “The children said it was all right being Victorian children for the day but no longer.

“They all did really well with their costumes and put in a lot of effort. We had a lovely time.”
