MIDDLETON and Wirksworth wrestler Ben Bellamy will represent England at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India later this year.
But the youngster is having to get to grips with a new style of freestyle coaching as he prepares for the 58kg competition.

The 15-year-old has just returned from a week’s intensive training at Lilleshall, in Shropshire, where he was coached by former Russian champion and current GB senior national squad coach Nickolai Kornyeyev.

His is a very different style of coaching than Ben is normally used to, but the Anthony Gell School pupil still managed to satisfy the Russian’s high expectations.

With only one weight entry per country allowed Ben had to compete in a wrestle-off with the best in the country, which eventually pitted him against Wigan’s Ashley Littler.

With such an opportunity for the victor at stake there was no way the Dales teenager was going to pass this one up and four wins out of five ensured that Ben will be among the five English wrestlers who will be travelling to the city of Pune for the start of the games on October 12.

A spokesman for the M&W club said: “This is just another milestone in the club’s recent history since being reformed six years ago and all at the wrestling club wish him the very best of luck.”

l BEN and clubmate Jack Lawley will be at this year’s Derbyshire Schools Sports Association awards in Derby to receive a special certificate in recognition of their excellent performances this season.
