When Andrew Burton was watching his son Daniel playing in the British Junior League last weekend, his report card would have made pleasant reading.

A gathering of 200 of the country’s top juniors converged on Stoke-on-Trent, and Daniel responded
to the challenge by winning seven out of his ten singles with at least five victories against much higher ranked opposition.

In recognition of his achievment he was presented with the coveted player of the weekend award by the ETTA president and the mayor of Stoke.

In the Division One matches we saw Cylinder Cougars beat Cromford Spireites 7-3.

This was a game in which Geoff Gill again showed his class remaining unbeaten on the night.

He was ably supported by Andy White who is now beginning to show the form we all know he is capable of.

The best of the Spireites was Andrew Burton who claimed two victories in the fixture.

In a high class encounter at Rowsley the Scorpions produced a fine display beating Bonsall Village A by a 9-1 majority.

Will Cooney was the best of the Scorpions winning all his matches in style, and supported by Matlock champion Mike Bradbury there was little doubt who was going to win this match.

Graham Cooper was the best of the visitors beating Andy Middleton to claim their only victory of the night.

A disappointing performance by the Cromford CC saw them go down to a 6-4 defeat at the hands of a two-man Cylinder Cougars B side.

There was a great effort here by Andy Horton of the Cougars who remained unbeaten for the second time this season. This said it was pleasing to see Mick Thorley coming back to play again so watch out for him in the coming weeks.

In Division Two a fractious fixture between Pommy and the second placed team Detonators went the way of the Detonators 9-1.

Anthony Gregory and Richard Tymchek were unbeaten for the Detonators. Only Mick Shimwell was able to win for the Pommy side beating young Eddie Gregory in a close five games.

In the third division only one match was completed with Bonsall Village C taking all the points against Whitworth Academy 3.

Robert Gregory played well for the Academy side taking two games but even he could not cope with the ability of Alex Brown (3).

Contrasting results for our two sides in the Swale Cup. Rowsley B pulled of a last match win when Louis Gay took the game with Jack Rice.

Rowsley A put up a fine fight with Colin Deaton A but with players of the class of Alan Fullwood against them were always behind and eventually went down by 23 points

Finally with the National Championships in Sheffield coming up on March 6 it will be great to see three Matlock & District League players involved.

Mike Bradbury (Rowsley Scorpions), Sam Perry (Rowsley 08) and William Cooney (Rowsley Scorpions) are all taking part so if you can attend this is not to be missed
