MATLOCK'S annual Mars triathlon took on a new form this year - and it appeared to be a more popular one with some of the participants.
The closure of Matlock’s Lido swimming pool meant organiser Karl Webster had to convert the event into a duathlon.

Around 100 athletes set off from Hall Leys Park on a 1.5-mile run, instead of the usual 400m swim, before returning for a ten-mile cycle ride and a second run of three miles up to High Tor and back.

The overall winner was Nottingham’s Nick Dunn (TFN) in 52 minutes and 12 seconds.

Second was Dean Cross in 52.58 and third was Chesterfield’s Steve Penney in 53.32.

First female finisher was Matlock Athletics Club’s Christine Howard in 59.46, a minute and 32 seconds in front of another TFN athlete, Verity Butler.

Helen Barnett was third female in 66.53.

First veteran 40 was Tony Caulton in 55.03, while Trevor Milner won the veteran 50 category in 64.56.

David Simpson was the veteran 60 winner in 68.25.

Vreni Verhoeven won the women’s veteran 40 competition in 69.20, while Matlock’s Jan Forrester was victorious in the veteran 50 ranks, in 67.36.

First U20 male was 15-year-old Joe Firth in 67.15, and first U20 female was Matlock AC’s Jenny Reed in 68.47, followed by Joanne Caulton in 78.23.

The event, which raised around £600 for the Matlock Area Recreation and Sport Group – which itself strives to generate public support for the proposed central area sports centre – received sponsorship from John Palin fruit and vegetable wholesalers and former participant Andy Ecclestone.
