Orme Shield Final
(at Bakewell CC)

Grindleford 71-1 beat Matlock 68-7

by nine wickets

AFTER a nerve jangling four run win over Ashford on the Wednesday evening, Matlock played Grindleford in the final of the Orme Shield at Bakewell CC on Friday, looking, lik
e Padraig Harrington, to win for the second consecutive year.

In front of a healthy crowd Matlock were asked to bat first, and were effectively shown how to play this shorter form of the game by a keen, enthusiastic and very able Grindleford team who ran out easy winners.

Only Rob Lowe and Luke Pressland managed double figures as all bowlers, especially Bingley bowled admirably.

His 3-7 included a wicket with the first ball of the game as Matlock huffed and puffed to 68-7.

In reply, Steve Haslam bowled Brown with the innings’ third ball, but that really was that.

Thompson (27 not out) and Outram (44 not out) took their time to bat themselves in, and then began to show really how to steal singles out of nothing.

Matlock fielders came closer and closer, leaving wide open spaces behind them which both batsmen took advantage of, Grindleford winning with three overs to spare at a canter.

Both team captains, Lowe and Outram, who was also man-of-the-match, made short speeches, thanking the Orme Shield Committee, their opposition and to Bakewell CC for hosting the evening.

Lowe also praised the local accomodation, which just goes to show how thorough his preparations for this game had been!
