IT was a mixed return to action for local hockey teams as Matlock Baileans firsts and Derwent's first and second teams had tough weekends.
Derwent firsts played twice as the second half of the East Midlands Division One season got underway, firstly visiting Ashbourne on Saturday and securing a 2-2 draw.

Derwent started brightly and with the returning Jamie Carlin in goal looked solid at the back.

Ashbourne missed a couple of early opportunities and Derwent too were wasteful with Simon Taylor, Adam Orduna, James Bolus and Luke Boden all off target.

The second-half saw Derwent take the lead early on when George Taylor created problems resulting in an own goal.

Ashbourne then scored twice to take the lead, including one from ex-Derwent man Tom Ellison.

But Derwent weren’t to be denied and in the dying seconds Harry Jepson and Bolus found themselves two-on-one with the keeper, Jepson feeding Bolus who tapped in for the equaliser.

Derwent’s second game of the weekend at home to Coalville wasn’t quite as productive as the visitors ran out 4-1 winners.

Coalville scored two in the first-half, one even going through the legs of Carlin in the Derwent goal and two more in the second half saw Derwent out of the game.

Gary Shardlow pulled one back but it was scant consolation.

Derwent host Leicester next week with a 1pm start.

Derwent seconds secured a home point after a 1-1 draw with Ashbourne seconds.

Derwent were slow to get started but soon created chances, though failed to convert any of them.

Ashbourne capitilised and scored with a classic break giving keeper Tom Hodgetts no chance.

Derwent re-organised at half-time and levelled five minutes into the second period with a fine shot across the D by Alan Seymour.

The final 30 minutes was a stalemate with Hodgetts making several saves, as both sides settled for a point.

Next week the seconds head north to play Buxton.

Baileans went into their friendly game with Burton feeling confident against a team in the league below, however they had a bigger fight on their hands than they had anticipated.

Matlock took the lead when Chloe Maynard swiftly converted from a penalty corner.

Man of the match Becky Bowman showed her excellent skills and penetrated through Burton’s defence on several occasions but Matlock were unable to convert, and Burton scrambled an equaliser just before half-time.

That’s how it finished and Matlock will need to sharpen up for next week’s top-of-the-table clash against Worcester
