PETER Colledge just needs one more Ashford Five time trial win to complete a clean sweep of the Matlock Cycling Club series.
But Chris Green edged past him in the points competition by maintaining his own perfect record.

In last week’s penultimate five-miler, Colledge won yet again, in 11.25, but his margin of victory was a mere three seconds over Richard Cordin, who was 12 seconds ahead of Colledge’s main time trials rival Green.

However, it was Green’s turn to maintain a 100 per cent record two nights later when he powered over the 7.4mile short hilly trial in 19.38, the first sub-20 minute ride of the season.

Colledge was second, just a second ahead of Cordin on this occasion.

Chris Sharp recorded a season’s best of 21.32 to narrowly beat Paul Hodgkinson and Jon Edwards into joint fifth place.

Julian Dobb rode to a very creditable tenth place and a time of 23.11 in his first ever time-trial.

Nick Pine and 16-year-old Josh Walker, riding the course for the first time, recorded 24.15 and 25.32 respectively.

Youngster Patrick Smart had mixed fortunes this week as a result of an un-shipped chain which cost him valuable seconds and he was just down on last week’s time, finishing in 30.14.

In the points competition Chris Green has edged in front of Peter Colledge despite Peter having won one event more than Chris.

Chris has notched up 284 points to Peter’s 275, both from 17 events.

Matlock’s first Open ‘10’ of the season attracted 49 riders and was comfortably won by scratchman Dominic Sweeney, of Lutterworth Cycle Centre, who won with an impressive 21.21.

Nearest challenger was Mark Mallender, of Rutland CC, who finished in 21.55.

In fact, Rutland CC placed three riders in the top five to take the team prize.

Peter Colledge was the first Matlock rider home in fourth place, with a time of 22.19.

Chris Green finished eighth with a time of 22.43 to set a new Matlock veterans course record.

John Hadfield, of Rutland CC, was first 50+ veteran to finish in a time of 22.51 and also took the handicap prize.

In the 60+ category Bill Straker, of Peak RC, finished in 25.04, and in the 70+ category George Steers, of Rutland CC, recorded 29-30.

First lady home was Matlock’s Christine Howard who finished 34th in 26.47 and first youth was Ben Kellett, of Holme Valley Wheelers, who recorded 26.37 in 33rd place.

The final short hilly takes place on Thursday May 8 from Cromford Station.

It starts at 6.30pm.

Tuesday May 13 sees the start of the evening 10’s from Church Lane, Darley Dale, with the longer hillys kicking off on Thursday 15th May.

Both start at 7pm.
