AFTER a very busy week of football in the MRA divisions, 2006/07 Premier Division champions Rowsley 86 remain unbeaten and full of goals.
Their week started with a 3-1 win over Ripley, with Lee Boden’s 40-yard chip fit to grace any game.
Before that, a Nik Baker cross had been turned into his own net by a Ripley defender and Craig Matkin had made it 2-0.
Then on Saturday, Rowsley
travelled to Allestree on Saturday without a recognised goalkeeper.
Dan Widdowson filled the position and soon silenced any pre-match concerns with a very competent display., while Steve Walker grabbed his first goal for the club as early as the third minute with a towering header.
Widdowson could do nothing as Gary Annable equalised from the penalty spot after 20 minutes, prompting a purple patch for the hosts, during which only good work at the back from Dickie and Froggatt kept Rowsley on level terms.
The game changed on the half hour mark when, first, Froggatt bullet headed home a free kick and then, almost immediately, Ashton thundered home after hesitant Allestree defending.
Lee Boden scored to kill off any remote comeback and Craig Matkin finished off the job with Rowsley’s fifth.
Praise went to Allestree for competing to the end and to the three officials who took the fixture at the 11th hour, S Tuft, T Garside and K Wagstaff, for their handling of the game.
Man-of-the-match was shared between Dan Widdowson and Nik Baker.
Another team with goalkeeping problems is Cromford, who have their first two choices both injured currently.
That said, right back Callum Martin acquitted himself commendably between the sticks in the 3-2 defeat at home to Matlock Town Reserves.
Jimmy Smith and Matt Smith scored for the hosts, while Luke Beatson, James Lawton and Rob Fretwell registered strikes for the Gladiators’ second string.
Not so good for either side on Saturday, though, with Cromford losing 3-0 at Sandiacre Town and Matlock getting thumped 5-1 by Ilkeston Town Reserves, Jake Pidcock claiming what proved to be a consolation for the Gladiators.
Two draws for Wirksworth Town, but no details of who did the scoring for them in the 2-2 affair with Derby Rolls Royce Leisure in midweek, but Russell Taylor earned a point against Melbourne Dynamo.
Ashover’s Mick Harcourt (two), his brother Will and Bill Bates between them grabbed the four goals that condemned Eastwood Town Reserves to a 4-2 defeat last week.
But the Milken Lane side, shorn of seven first team regulars, lost 3-2 to promoted Willington, whose results at least are making them look like early outside title candidates already.
Stef Holland and Mark Needham scored for Ashover.
In Division One, Martin Travis grabbed a hat-trick as Matlock Sports drew 3-3 with Beeston on Saturday.
Travis had already been on target on Wednesday, as had team mate George Whittaker, but the result had been a 3-2 reverse at the hands of Dronfield Town Reserves.
A forgettable few days for Woolley Moor United.
