Matlock Tigers...........................3
Matlock Tigers travelled to Alfreton requiring all three points to win the league, but with Alfreton having the advantage of the slope and Matlock showing si
gns of nerves the away supporters had little to smile about during the first quarter apart from the lovely weather.
Slowly, Will Swift and Jay Whitworth turned the red tide, Adam Wilson, Ben Ashmore, Felix Higgins and Greg Slater in Matlock’s defence were getting to grips with the Alfreton forwards, and Ewan Fisher in goal may have been busy but he never looked like being beaten.
However, his counterpart was beaten when Marcus Vickery headed a free kick in to take the Tigers a step closer to the title. This goal seemed to settle the away team’s nerves, and with George Tighe and Tristan Kawalek combining well on the right the Tigers finished on top at half time.
Matlock had the advantage of the slope in the second half and within five minutes of the restart had doubled their lead when Vickery’s persistence paid off with a deserved second goal.
Alfreton’s attacks were now just sporadic forays into Matlock’s half and these were snuffed out by determined defending by Ashley Billam and Will Hodgetts.
Man-of-the-match Adam Wilson, now in midfield, stamped his authority on the match, James McDonald and Tom Kellett kept Alfreton’s defence on the back foot, and with five minutes left Jamie Webster scored a trademark goal from outside the area to seal the points and give the title to the Tigers.
