Derby City Football League – League Challenge Trophy
Wirksworth Albion 8

Spondon Dynamos 0

WIRKSWORTH progressed to the next round in some style with a comprehensive victory over Spondon.

Albion took the lead with their first attack, Billy Lobley playing the ball to Gary Webster whose cross
into the area was side footed across the keeper into the net by Craig Spencer.

With their next attack the home side made it two, Webster pulling the ball back to Alex Howard who from the right hand edge of the area powered his shot into the far corner.

On 12 minutes Wirksworth scored number three, Ben Waterfall’s ball over the top being chased by Webster who breezed past the last defender before smashing the ball high into the Dynamos net.

Goal number four came with 30 minutes gone, Martin Dance picking out Scott Ryder on the left whose super delivery in from the byeline gave Lobley an easy tap in.

Moments later the lead was increased. Dance was again involved, this time playing Craig Spencer through on goal where he placed his shot just inside the far post.

Straight from the kick-off, Albion were on the attack again, Lobley playing the ball out wide to Howard whose ball back to the edge of the box was volleyed home in style by Dance.

Just on half-time Wirksworth scored number seven, Lobley’s corner being fired home by Scott Gascoyne.

The second-half saw further chances come the home side’s way, the best of these falling to Gascoyne, Spencer and Howard, but all failing to hit the target.

They did manage to add one goal to their tally, Ian Spencer picking out Tom Naylor whose run into the area was capped with his first goal for Albion.

Wirksworth Colts Ladies 6 Sharley Park Ladies 3

THE Fairtrade Wirksworth Ladies returned after a two-month break and emphatically overcame Sharley Park

The early rustiness showed and only a brilliant save from Louise Simms kept the scores even.

Sharley Park then took the lead, but the spirited Wirksworth team hit back with two quick goals.

The first was clinically finished by Katy Brown after a good pass by Rachael Baldock, the second a lovely header by Sam Glanville from a superb Laura Sephton cross.

But Sharley battled back and equalised just before half-time.

Wirksworth upped their game in the second-half and re-took the lead when Glanville broke free of the defence and finished expertly.

Wirksworth had numerous chances to add to their lead, but against the run of play Sharley Park broke away to equalise again.

However, the Wirksworth character once again showed as they scored three goals in the last 20 minutes.

The first of these came from Sephton, before Glanville completed her hat-trick and the excellent Baldock completed the scoring.

This was a really good performance from the Wirksworth team.
