Sandiacre 194-7 drew with Matlock 2nds 128-6
The unavailability of players peaked on this perfect day for cricket and caused Matlock to cancel the third team fixture in order to fulfil the County League Division Five fixture at Sandiacre, a situation which may well recur unless the squad numbers are strengthened.
The team which travelled to Sandiacre contained seven third team members, a number of father-and-son relationships, but without their injured captain.
In the circumstances, vice-captain Matt Haywood should be proud of his team’s performance in achieving a losing draw by surviving the 46 overs in reply to Sandiacre’s daunting total of 194-7.
Wicket takers were David Lander (2-15), Tim Braund (1-45), Mick Lander (1-37, the wicket of top scorer Gareth Davis) and a very creditable 2-27 in 14 overs by Rob Lowe.
The Matlock reply got off to a bad start, losing two quick wickets, but Dave Lander (31) and junior player Ed Fletcher put together a 59-run partnership.
Matt Haywood (18) too looked in good form until run out at 93-4. The shutters had to go up and Fletcher (38 not out) showed his maturity, remaining firm to the end, partnered by juniors Phil Braund, Rory Simpson and veteran Mick Lander (15) to gain a valuable seven points for the losing draw.
Any unengaged players who would like to help strengthen the second team squad and play on one of the most attractive grounds in Derbyshire are asked to make contact. Call skipper Paul Chadbourne on 07775 676109.
