Ashford fight hard in losing cause

Sheffield Civil Service 1st XI 125–8 (25pts) beat Ashford in the Water 1st XI 124 all out (7pts) by 2 wickets

Ashford suffered back-to-back Yorkshire and Derbyshire Cricket League Division Two defeats for the first time this season with a narrow loss at a cold and windswept Civil Service ground.

Asked to bat on a damp wicket, Ashford made a solid start as Jamie Carrington (14) and Paul Carrington battled hard in the adverse conditions, putting on 34 for the opening partnership.

Progress remained steady as Julian Henson (17) continued the good work, but once he was out, Carrington fell unluckily soon afterwards, run out for exactly 50.

There then followed an all-too-familiar collapse as extras became the only other double-figure contributor, leaving Ashford on the under par total of 124.

Along with three run-outs, Lakshmikanth Rathinasamy (5-34) was chief wicket-taker for the home side.

Civil Service’s reply got off to a shaky start as Zac Dann took a sharp catch off the bowling of Peter Marsden (2-37), but Andy Higgins (34) and David Whitby (41) put the home side in control before the introduction of Rob Ellis.

Along with Jamie Carrington (3-23), Ellis (3-38) swung the game back towards the visitors. But although Ashford fought hard to the end, dropped catches proved costly as SCS hung on, reaching their target with two wickets in hand.
