Ambergate put on a good, controlled performance in the MRA Challenge Cup second round to see off Newhall United Reserves at Whitemooor.

Ambergate took the lead after just four minutes when Josh Squires drilled in a low shot.

The second-half then started the same as the first as Ambergate scored an early goal. A long throw by Squires was met well by Jody Waldron and his header nestled into the bottom corner.

Within minutes Ambergate had their third as Tom Smith’s diving header found the net, and sub Richard Tomlinson rounded off the win late on from the edge of the area.

Elsewhere in the MRA, a brace from Will Fletcher along with goals from Tim Baker and Aaron O’Neill helped second-placed Rowsley ’86 to a 4-0 win at Allestree.

Despite a strong display from Cromford, Adam Twigg’s goal for the hosts couldn’t prevent them going down 2-1 at home to Derby Rolls Royce Leisure.

Willington Sports were on the receiving end of a 5-0 defeat at the hands of visitors Wirksworth Town Reserves in their Division Two contest.

Martin Dance, Izaak Ward, Michael Whittall, Alex Brown, and Luke Gostkowski were on target for Wirksworth.

In cup action, Shardlow St James progress into the next round after they beat Matlock Town CFA 3-2, while it was even tighter between Wirksworth Ivanhoe and Rowsley ’86 Reserves who were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and then 2-2 after extra-time before Rowsley won 4-2 on penalties.
