DARLEY Dale 1sts inflicted a three-wicket defeat on visitors Marehay in Division 4N of the Derbyshire County League on Saturday.

This was a first defeat of the season for Marehay’s second team.

Marc Pykett (0) and Craig Robinson (3) both fell early but Mat Bailey was playing confidently at the other end. Ady Vickerage (14) and Gaz Wilson (15) both fell LBW to Paul Carson (3-26) and the same bowler picked up the key wicket of Bailey, bowled for 42.

At 86-5, Marehay were in real danger of being bowled out cheaply but a valuable sixth-wicket partnership of 46 between Dan Palmer (29) and Chris Bradder (16) gave the score a more respectable look.

Chris Ford (25 not out) added much needed runs in the closing overs to take the score up to a reasonable, but below par, 174-9 from 46 overs.

Darley Dale made a steady start in reply and it was Bailey who made a breakthrough in removing Craig Elliott (12) and Adrian Kershaw (5) and when Darren Hooley had Jack Stone (6) caught by Pykett, the game was in the balance. However, a crucial partnership of 88 between Jamie Watts (43) and Jacob Hartley (42) took the score to 135-3 before both batsmen fell and were soon followed by Dougie Briggs (4) at 141-6.

Hooley (4-41) picked up his fourth and the seventh to fall as Matthew Heath (7) was adjudged LBW but it was left to Carson and Simon Cotterill to guide the home side to a three-wicket victory with two overs to spare.
