REIGNING Derbyshire Dales Sports Award winner Ellie Koyander is calling on people to get their nominations in for this year’s event.
The Dales’ very Olympic Mogul skier, from Tideswell, was Sports Woman of the Year in 2010 at both district and county level and has been a previous winner of the Junior Sports Person of the Year title.
She explained: “I am really pleased to have been a part of the Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards first as a junior winner, but then as the Sports Person of the Year in 2010, following my Olympic debut at the Vancouver Games.
“At the awards ceremony, it is really uplifting to see so many talented young athletes being nominated and the standards get higher and higher each year. For me, it’s excellent to have local recognition and hopefully my story of being a winter Olympic skier will inspire others to believe anything is possible and there really are no limits to what you can achieve.”
Eleven Derbyshire Dales sports awards are available, including nominations for performance, volunteering in sport and clubs and team awards. There is also the opportunity to celebrate an ‘unsung hero’, someone who has made a significant voluntary contribution to sport.
Cllr Janet Goodison, chairman of the district council’s community and environment committee praised Ellie’s achievements and added: “The sports awards are our way of saying well done and to recognise all people and clubs that make achievement possible at the top end and at grass roots levels too, making the Derbyshire Dales such a healthy and active place to live.”
Nominations forms are available online at derbyshiredales.gov.uk/sports awards or by contacting the Sports Development Team on 01629 761225.
The deadline for nominations is August 19 and the winners and runners-up will be invited to a ceremony in October.
