Fearn’s the catalyst in Bakewell win

Yorks & Derbyshire League

An full-strength Bakewell side swept aside their opponents by 175 runs in a comfortable outright win against Sheffield University Staff CC 2nd XI on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Sheffield decided to bowl, a decision that looked justified as Dave Hadfield was bowled for a single run with the score on 17.

However, left-hander Jeff Madin entered the fray and struck a dogged and determined 44, supported by opener Lee Tann (63), and the pair took the score to 91-2 before Tann succumbed to the bowling of Chris Stride (3-63).

At 153-6, Richard Reed (37 not out) was joined by Paul Fearn for 15 deliveries and he proceeded to smash 43 runs, including six fours and a huge six, to leave the visitors a target of 218-8.

Fearn then turned match winner and chief tormentor, with a devastating bowling spell that left the University Staff on 18-7 and saw the paceman finish with impressive figures of 6-22, supported by Mick Clark (2-14) and Jack Madin (2-7), as the visitors were dispatched for just 43 all out.
