Albion show their six appeal to see off league new boys

Wirksworth Albion 6 Codnor 3

Albion entertained newly promoted Codnor, last year’s Premier Division Two Champions, to begin the season.

The home side had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead throughAlex Dawson’s sweetly struck shot.

The lead was increased when Adrian Kershaw’s left-to-right crossfield pass played in Gary Webster, who fired across the keeper into the far corner. The visitors pulled a goal back through Aaron Wood. Codnor gradually fought their way back into the game and were awarded a penalty, Joe Crossley converting.

Continuing to push forward, Codnor took the lead with their next attack, Wood’s fine finish giving Mark Brough no chance.

Wirksworth were quickly level again when Kershaw’s cross was deflected into his own net by a Codnor player. Midway through the half, Albion regained the lead through Kershaw.

The home side dominated the remainder of the game and scored a fourth when Dawson’s stunning right foot strike found the inside of the far post.

Alex Dawson then secured his hat-trick to complete the scoring for Albion.
