Derbyshire’s historic Cavendish Cup was deservedly lifted high by rampant Riddings Rovers as they triumphed 3-1 over Wirksworth Albion on Monday night.

Two goals from man-of-the-match Dave Robinson and an unselfish pass to Andy Lowe earned the win at Matlock Town’s Causeway Lane ground.

Wirksworth, disappointed to lose out in their second final of the season, were competitive and worked hard with the scores level at the break.

But it was just four minutes into the second half when Lowe put Robinson through for his first and ten minutes later Richard Fenn slipped a pinpoint pass for his second.

Albion netted through an own goal after a good period of pressure before Lowe sealed the victory for Riddings, who were well-organised by manager Mark Turner, who came off the bench in the second half.

Referee of the year Graham Brentnall had little to do as both teams competed well in a good-natured game watched by several hundred people.

Matlock & District Football League weekend action saw The King’s Arms take a commanding seven-point lead at the table summit after a slim 1-0 home victory over Darley Dale Lions, thanks to a goal from Scott Gregory.

It stretched their advantage over second-placed Hilcote United, who slipped up 2-1 against Woodthorpe Rovers. Carl Whitford and Ben Bower’s goals cancelled out David Gibson’s strike.

Riddings Rovers triumphed on the road with a 3-1 victory over Matlock Town Youth thanks to Mark Turner, brother Chris Turner and Gavin Bocking’s goals. Matlock rued missed chances with Alex Crossley the only one to hit the back of the net.

Third-placed Laburnum Saints secured valuable points through Matt Mosley and Jak Thornley’s goals over basement club Harvey’s Bar, who failed to score.

Tansley’s Danny Jackson’s single against Black Hippo, who ended the season second from bottom despite a significant improvement on the previous campaign, was enough to place them, finishing third from bottom.

Spoils were shared 2-2 between Tibshelf and Wirksworth. Tibshelf’s Danny Hough grabbed a brace while Craig Wheeldon and Dave Vinall scored for the visitors.

Fixtures for Saturday include Wirksworth Albion v Hilcote United, Shirland MW v The Kings Arms, AFC Lea Holloway v Harveys Bar, Riddings Rovers v Laburnum Saints and Woodthorpe Rovers v Darley Dale Lions.
