Darley lose by odd goal

The Matlock & District Football League continues to go from strength to strength for its standard of football, refereering, pitches and many other facets, and is already attracting a host of teams wanting to get involved for the 2012-2013 season, to the delight of its committee.

This weekend’s selection of matches was once again packed full of goals. One of the games saw Darley Dale fight to the very end against Woodthorpe Rovers, who have a real taste for silverware this season, the final result being 4-3 to Woodthorpe. Andrew Clifton scored a hat-trick for Darley.

Matlock Sports failed to get all three points with a 3-3 draw against AFC Lea Holloway, Callum Lytham getting two for Matlock, Stephen Burrell also hitting two for Holloway.

Codnor continued thier fine form with a win against AFC South Wingfield. Tom Hawkins opened the scoring on 22 minutes after beating two players just inside the box before firing home a thunderbolt into the top corner. Only three minutes later, Codnor went 2-0 up after a cross into the box hit a defender and deflected in.

Wingfield scored on 30 minutes to make the score 2-1 but ten minutes later a free-kick from Tom Hawkins found the head of Matt Craig who fired the ball home. Wingfield again pulled one back on 55 minutes with a spectacular goal.

In the remaining, nailbiting minutes, both teams scored again but it was Codnor who hung on to claim all three points, top spot and the bragging rights as the only unbeaten side in Division Two.
