A FOOTBALL event for girls has attracted twice as many youngsters as last year and organisers are hoping to hold a follow-up later in the summer.

Football 4 Girls was held at Wirksworth Leisure Centre and organised by Derbyshire County FA and Derbyshire Dales District Council. Last year’s first get-together was attended by 12 youngsters but this time out, that figure rose to 23 girls aged 8 to 12.

Angie Harper, Derbyshire County FA’s women, girls and inclusion football development officer, explained: “It was a great day and the girls received skills coaching, team building exercises and a chat from the police about personal safety. We are definitely going to have another event, hopefully in the summer.”

She added: “We gave them a goodie bag and included in that were the details for Wirksworth Colts in case they want to take their interest in football any further.”
