North Midlands Under 19s League Cup – Semi Final
West Bridgford u19s 1
Matlock Town u19s 3
THE young Gladiators progressed through to the final of the League Cup after victory at West Bridgford.
Town started well and dominated the first period with Scott Margareson in goal a spectator for most of the half.
They deservedly took the lead through Liam Hendley after 15 minutes and doubled their lead when Lewis Hayward converted a penalty which saw West Bridgford’s defender red carded five minutes before the break.
The game should have been out of sight by half-time, such was the Matlock dominance but the second period against a battling West Bridgford was a different story.
Matlock never got their football flowing on a wet surface and it was West Bridgford who were the better side for most of the second period.
But the game was killed off for Matlock after 75 minutes when Liam Hendley headed his second and Matlock’s third to make it 3-0.
Three substitutions meant Matlock took time to settle again and, although West Bridgford continued to work hard and gained a last-minute consolation, it was Matlock who, over 90 minutes, deservedly progressed to the final to face Radford FC.
A date has yet to be set for the final, which will be held at Long Eaton United’s Grange Park ground, kicking off at 7.45pm.
Credit must go to the young Gladiators this season with what is a young squad competing at an excellent level.
