ROSS Hannah struck with 16 minutes left to earn Matlock three more points in their play-off bid.

Liam King and Adam Yates were again paired at the back with James Lukic a flu victim, while James Knowles and Kris Bowler also made the line-up.

Lee Morris received an early welcome home present with James Colliver bringing him down heavily, Gareth Davies’ free kick being cleared.

There was little for the 223 crowd to be excited about early on as both sides mis-placed their passes and the drenched pitch was also causing several players to lose their balance.

The tedium was briefly broken when on 12 minutes Morris did well to engineer a shooting opportunity for himself 15 yards out, but could then only fire tamely at goalkeeper Ben Simpson.

After Knowles was yellow carded for a heavy challenge on Mark Whitehouse, Adam Sollitt was able to comfortably grab the resulting shot from full-back James Kay.

Then on 21 minutes, following a rare misjudgement by Yates, Ashley Burbeary broke through but Sollitt timed his interception to perfection as the winger tried to round him.

Six minutes later came Hannah’s first chance of the game as he was found by Bowler, but Simpson was out quickly to block Hannah’s low finish with his feet.

Knowles pulled a shot wide after being well found by Ben Turner, and the half finished with Matlock on the attack again as Hannah placed his header wide from a Knowles’ cross.

The second-half saw Sollitt the first keeper called into action as he held a free-kick from Whitehouse.

Second-half Frickley sub Danny Simpson forced Sollitt to save well from a well struck 66th minute shot, but this would be virtually the host’s last dangerous foray.

Matlock took over as following a neat nod on by Hannah, Davies drove wide when well placed. Then goalkeeper Simpson dived to his left to parry away a goalbound strike from Lee Featherstone before Hannah struck gold.

Yates took a free-kick quickly after an offside verdict, spotting Hannah free, and the Gladiators’ top scorer took the ball in his stride before turning and finding the target from the edge of the box with his unfavoured right foot, the ball going in off the inside of Simpson’s left hand post.

Hannah was unlucky not to double the lead four minutes later as Simpson superbly tipped an equally excellent 25-yarder onto the bar, the ball dropping to Nathan Joynes who scuffed wide.

But Frickley’s challenge evaporated as Matlock finished as worthy winners.
