Laburnum in semis victory

Manor Pharmacy Matlock and District League round-up

by Drew Robertson

Solid defending, hard-working midfielders and three goals booked Laburnum the first Manor Pharmacy Shield Final berth thanks to a 3-0 victory on Matlock’s Cavendish Playing Fields.

Goals from Michael Charlton, Andy Clifton and Pete Denton were the icing on tireless running and tackling from Dave Whitworth, Chris Slack, Pete Denton and Matt Mosley which overcame the brave and workmanlike visiting Tibshelf.

Matlock & District Football League action saw Hilcote extend their advantage at the top to two points as leading goalscorer Daniel Ryan bagged a brace, with Daniel Noakes adding to the 3-0 tally over a much-improved Tansley.

Cavendish Cup action saw Wirksworth Albion win a 4-2 home penalty shoot-out with spotkicks from Tommy Timber, Josh Vallance, Nutty Brown and Lee Chamberlain defeating The Kings Arms, Crich, to book a semi-final slot. The visiting Craig Merrett and Spencer Ford beat the keeper. It was 2-2 after extra-time thanks to Albion strikes from Rob Thompson and James Frost and Kings’ scorers Daniel Spencer and Luke Mason.

Woodthorpe Rovers jumped to second slot with a 3-1 away win against Black Hippo. Two goals from Gary Siddall and an Ian Knowles strike did the damage, with Hippo’s Anthony Hatfield netting.

Darley Dale Lions have countless games in hand as they have been worst hit by the season’s poor weather so a 2-0 Whitworth Park home victory against AFC Lea Holloway was a relief for them, with Liam Ashton netting and the second coming from an own goal.

Rampant Riddings Rovers’ second-half managerial magic from Mark Turner made them solid in midfield and in the end they were too physical for visiting Matlock Town Youth. Fraser Kirk gave Matlock the lead before David Robinson’s hat-trick, Artur Gugala and Rich Fenn brought about the Riddings’ revival.

Harvey’s Bar worked hard against Shirland Miners Welfare with Chris Haywood and Chris Gratton scoring for Harvey’s and Lee Bellamy and Ben Skelton ensuring honours were even in a 2-2 draw.

This Saturday sees the second Manor Pharmacy semi-final with Wirksworth Albion taking on Riddings Rovers at home. League action includes Hilcote United v AFC Lea Holloway, Darley Dale Lions v Tibshelf, Laburnum Saints v Black Hippo, Woodthorpe Rovers v Shirland Miners Welfare, Tansley v Harvey’s Bar and The King’s Arms v Matlock Town Youth.
