matlock Town under 19s rounded off their season in triumphant style by lifting the Windsor Foods North Midlands Under 19s League Cup in a match that was only decided after extra time.

They beat Radford 2-1 in a match played in front of a crowd of over 200 at Long Eaton United’s Grange Park ground.

On a hard pitch and in blazing sunshine, the teams combined to produce a feast of football that was a credit to the league.

Radford hit the bar with an early chance and then Matlock had an attack where the ball was cleared off the line no less than four times.

The Gladiators’ pressure was rewarded on 25 minutes when Liam Hendley scored after a sweeping move.

They held the lead until five minutes before half-time, when Radford finished clinically to set up an intriguing second half.

After the break, the game contained plenty of end-to-end action but it still remained 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes so extra time was required.

The superb football continued and Matlock took what turned out to be a crucial lead when Greg Marriott got on the end of David Boden’s throw and slotted the ball home.

The final 15 minutes seemed like 50 as the weary Matlock lads held on defiantly and Radford pressed for an equaliser.

Goalkeeper Scott Margereson showed real bravery to battle on through to the end of extra time with what turned out to be a broken collarbone sustained during a challenge earlier in the game.

Both sides contributed to a memorable evening and all present agreed that the club can be proud of how the lads performed and represented Matlock on the night.

Manager Mick Bulheller, assistant manager Andy Baker and team sports therapist Beverley Thompson were delighted with the outcome and said: “Thanks to the lads for your efforts this season. You got what you deserved in the end. Well done!”
