Darley Dale Lions marched confidently into the Derbyshire Junior Cup North Quarter-Finals with a confident 5-1 victory over fellow Matlock leaguers Tansley on Saturday.

Both Liam Keeton and Wes Harrop bagged braces, with Martin French adding to the away side’s goals. Tansley replied with an effort from Alex Cramp.

Victory now sees Darley Dale at home against Chapel Town this Saturday (January 22) in what will no doubt be a competitve encounter at Whitworth Park.

There was no such luck for The King’s Arms as they bowed out of the same competition 5-0 away at Renishaw Social Club.

The Matlock & District Football League’s premier trophy – the historical Cavendish Cup – got under way with wins for Woodthorpe Rovers, Laburnum Saints, Riddings Rovers and Wirksworth Albion.

It was Aaron Large who hit a hat-trick as Woodthorpe overcame Shirland Miners Welfare 3-1 away with the home side’s Andrew Spence scoring for the Stonebroom outfit.

Dave Whitworth, Michael Charlton and Pete Denton earned Laburnum their 3-0 win over Black Hippo at Cavendish Playing Fields.

And there were plenty of goals for Riddings as they crushed Harvey’s Bar 8-0 away with goals from Chris Turner (two), Shane Buckerfield (two), Andy Lowe (two) and Ricky Ashmore. An own goal added to the tally. Completing the weekend’s action, Craig Wheeldon, Tom Bunting, Ian Spencer, Rob Thompson and Josh Vallance were on target as Wirksworth beat Matlock 5-2 at home. The visitors replied with strikes from Sam Kay and Callam Lytham.

This Saturday sees Darley Dale Lions v Chapel Town in the Derbyshire Junior Cup North while there is a return to league action with Matlock Town Youth v Laburnum Saints, Black Hippo v The Kings Arms, Wirksworth Albion v AFC Lea Holloway, Riddings Rovers v Tansley, Tibshelf v Woodthorpe Rovers and Harveys Bar v Hilcote United.
