No change for top three as Matlock and District League teams return to the fray

Matlock and District Football League Round-up

by Drew Robertson

THE Matlock & District Football League sprung back into action with a vengeance at the weekend as the weather put paid to just one fixture.

It brought wins for the top three as Woodthorpe Rovers, Hilcote United and The King’s Arms retained the order at the top of the championship table.

And there was also delight for an improving Tansley as they also earned three points for their efforts.

Derbyshire Cup Junior Cup North action saw disappointment for Darley Dale Lions, who gave a courageous, hard-fought performance in their 2-1 extra-time quarter-final defeat to Chapel Town, in a match played at Whitworth Park.

John Dunsby was on target for Lions, who were lucky to lose with just minutes left.

Table-toppers Woodthorpe earned their 4-1 away victory against Tibshelf with a brace from Aaron Large and strikes from Matt Walsh and Mark White.

Tibshelf felt themselves unlucky despite the scoreline as their man-of-the-match Paul Holmes replied for the home side.

Second-placed Hilcote United earned their ‘fantastic five’ 5-2 win over Harvey’s Bar with an away hat-trick from David Gibson, while Daniel Fisher and Daniel Noakes added to their tally.

Harvey’s’ Craig Cantril and Dom Newton scored for the home team.

Dan Bennet, Dan Gould, Richard West and Steve Brown struck for The King’s Arms in a close 4-3 battle with the spirited Black Hippo, whose Joe Taylor, Jay Roose and Ben Chamberlain netted.

That result retained third place for the Crich travellers.

Tansley were much improved as Matt Tong (two), Paul Mellor and Alex Cramp earned a 4-2 victory on the road against a disappointing Riddings Rovers, whose Artur Gugala and Gavin Bocking scored for the home side.

AFC Lea Holloway felt they ‘battered’ Wirksworth Albion away from home in the second half but surrendered the lead with 20 minutes to go as honours were shared in a 2-2 encounter.

Alex Howard and Tom Bunting were on target for Wirksworth, while Shaun Bott and Gareth Lewin struck for the visitors.

This Saturday (January 29) sees two more Cavendish Cup first round matches, namely Darley Dale Lions v Tansley and Tibshelf v The King’s Arms.

League action includes AFC Lea Holloway v Black Hippo, Matlock Town Youth v Shirland Miners Welfare, Laburnum Saints v Harvey’s Bar, Hilcote United v Riddings Rovers and Woodthorpe Rovers v Wirksworth Albion.
