Matlock Sports 3
Derby Royals 1
MATLOCK Sports clinched promotion to the Premier Division of the Midlands Regional Alliance with an outstanding performance to beat closest rivals Derby Royals.
It was the second time in three weeks that Sports had beaten the Royals to set up a great finish to the Division One campaign.
Sports were dominant in all areas with Williams and Whittaker solid in defence and Charlton and Cartwright controlling midfield.
The early pressure paid off when Grant Boden unleashed a great shot from 20 yards out that screamed into the bottom corner.
With their tails up, the outstanding Dan Bridge once again outpaced the Royals’ defence to slot in with a quality finish.
Sports held this lead comfortably up to half-time.
The second half started with the Royals throwing caution to the wind, putting four strikers up front and, from a long-range strike, the impressive Adam Gratton pushed the ball onto the crossbar, only for it to bounce down and strike him on the head, unfortunately diverting it into the goal.
The Sports’ response was immediate and the best was yet to come as Asquith fed Bridge who in turn headed on for captain Rab to volley home and send ecstatic Sports into the Premier League for the first time in their short history.
