LABURNUM Saints caused a massive upset in the Matlock and District League’s Hellison Trophies Division One by beating title contenders Woodthorpe Rovers 4-3.

This was a welcome three points for Laburnum but a huge three points lost by Woodthorpe who will want to regroup fast and put this result behind them. Scorers for Laburnum were Steve Prime (two), Chris Slack and Matt Marshall, with Aaron Large, Gaz Sidall and Mark Bower getting on the scoresheet for Woodthorpe.

In the Solar Press Division Two, Codnor Miners extended their lead at the top of the table in a very tight affair with Riddings Rovers.

Codnor had Will Marriott to thank in the first half with a couple of fine saves keeping Codnor and the score at 0-0 until just before the break when Loz Bond was fouled in the box and Codnor were awarded a penalty, Tom Hawkins stepping up to score his seventh penalty of the season and give Codnor a slim lead before the half-time break.

Codnor started the second half with real venom and within two minutes of the kick-off, they were 2-0 up after a stunning goal from Tom Hawkins. But you can never write off Riddings Rovers and, within ten minutes of Codnor’s goal and some fantastic one-touch football, Riddings got back into the game, scoring with a header from a corner.

The next 20 minutes saw a real battle between two great footballing sides and, on 70 minutes, Riddings got the goal they deserved to put the teams level. However, it wasn’t to be Riddings’ day when Codnor responded quickly with a goal five minutes later, Loz Bond scoring a thunderbolt from six yards out.

Shirebrook Rangers extended their lead at the top of the table with an 8-0 win against a struggling Darley Dale side.

Shirland’s day started badly when news came that a host of players were missing through injury and that keeper Daz Shaw would be out for a number of weeks.

With no other keeper in the Shirland ranks, defender Anthony Brooks stepped into the breach.

Although Shirland lost this game 5-0, the match was pretty even, that is until the 70th minute mark when Shirland started to lose shape and Hopflower went on the rampage, turning in some play that was worthy of their Derbyshire Cup semi-final place and their position in the league.
