Semi-final shock sees in-form United crash out

WIRKSWORTH Town have, of late, been a little out of sorts but they put all that behind them to refind their form of the early season and score something of an upset when they beat Allenton United 5-4 after extra time to secure a place in the Challenge Cup Final.

Belper United finished their Premier Division campaign with a 4-2 victory over Newmount in which both Shaun Smith and James Baxter scored a brace.

Long Eaton United Reserves won 5-1 at Castle Donington Town while Melbourne Dynamo with the assistance of two own goals beat Derby Rolls-Royce Leisure 5-1. Dave Brough, two, and Lee Scott scored the other Dynamo goals.

In Division One, the promotion battle continued with Matlock Sports beating Holbrook St Michaels Reserves 2-1. Saul Asquith scored both goals, Mickleover RBL beat Little Eaton while Derby Royals won 2-1 at Ripley Town. Kenny Birks scored the Ripley goal. Findern lost 5-0 to Punjab United.

In Division Two, Woolley Moor United’s promotion hopes took a knock when could only draw 4-4 with Sandiacre Town Reserves.

Brett Turner, Liam Wajs, Tom Norris and Jamie Alberts all scoring for Woolley Moor.

Dave Worger, Jeff Stevens, Pete Andrew and Sam Cudworth all scored for Pastures Reserves as they beat Swanwick Pentrich Road Reserves 4-3.

Scott Abbey scored the Hilton Harriers goal as they lost 2-1 to Punjab United Reserves while Roe Farm beat Selston Reserves 2-1. Wirksworth Ivanhoe and Wirksworth Town Reserves played out a goalless draw. There were also a number of Midlands Regional Alliance games played in the Bank Holiday sun on Monday.

In the Challenge Cup semi-final, Willington FC booked their place in the final in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 thumping of Derby Royals FC in a match played at Mickleover RBL.

In the Premier Division, Allenton United beat Wirksworth Town 3-0 while in Division One Holbrook St Michaels Reserves got the better of visitors Findern FC 4-2. In the same league, Mickleover RBL travelled to Selston FC Reserves and came away with a 2-0 victory.

Finally, in Division Two, Rowsley 86 FC Reserves beat hosts Melbourne Dynamo 4-1, Pastures FC Reserves were hammered 7-1 by visitors Woolley Moor United, Sandiacre Town Reserves earned a 5-1 victory at home to Bargate Rovers Reserves and Wirksworth Town Reserves earned a 1-1 draw at home to Swanwick Pentrich Road Reserves.
