Spireites blogger: Back four impress in win over York City

Chesterfield climbed up four places to ninth with an important 3-0 home win over York City, crowned by Chesterfield’s first clean sheet at the Proact Stadium this season.

In my eyes the first half was inevitably going to be tense, because York City had conceded just nine first half goals in their previous 20 matches.

In fact, York City had lost just three away matches in 2012 previously. Sam Hird’s last-ditch tackle prevented an early York City goal, before Hird almost opened the scoring himself. In a half a few chances, Luis Boa Morte was clean through just before half time, when he blazed over.

The first goal in this game was vital, and it came just after half time.

Drew Talbot has now started for 43 consecutive Chesterfield matches in all competitions, and he slid home the opener. With 15 minutes remaining, Chesterfield put the result to bed with two quick-fire goals!

Substitute Danny Whitaker’s first couple of touches saw him find the back of the net, and as if he hadn’t made enough of an impact, he then pounced on a sloppy back-pass, to leave the keeper stranded. Tendayi Darikwa eventually smashed in to make it 3-0.

My men of the match were the commanding back defenders; I thought they were the reason York City had little to trouble Tommy Lee.

The York fans will reflect on the key moment that happened right in front of them!

Striker Jason Walker seemed to be manhandled to the ground by Liam Cooper with the scores at 1-0, but the referee couldn’t see enough to give a penalty. I must say as the game reached the hour mark, I would have 100 per cent taken a 1-0 win.

With 16 different scorers since the start of November, Chesterfield have enough strength in depth and they showed on Boxing Day that not even the absence of in-form Marc Richards and top scorer Jack Lester does too much harm.

But what makes be more confident is that the Spireites have bounced back with a win after all their four defeats under Paul Cook.
