MATLOCK defied the second-half sending-off of Gareth Davies to move up to third in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

And they even had to come from behind to do it, as Gary Bradshaw gave visitors North Ferriby the lead in only the sixth minute, stretching to score an effort which went in off the post.

Ferriby looked bright going forward and Matlock did well initially to steady the ship and then fight their way back into contention.

The improvement began when Kris Bowler burst into the box to flick Steve Warne’s cross over the bar. Then defender Adam Yates headed a corner narrowly wide.

But the equaliser was not long in arriving and it was a terrific effort. Liam King’s long searching pass out of defence found Lee Morris on the right and he crossed superbly for Ross Hannah to clip a controlled finish past goalkeeper Steve Wilson for his 29th goal of the campaign.

Shortly afterwards Yates had another presentable headed opportunity, this time he narrowly cleared the bar.

Warne then shot wide and at the other end Sam Denton and Bradshaw both went close for the visitors before the break.

Yet another Yates header flew wide, this being his best chance, as the second-half got under way, but as in the opening half, Ferriby looked to be having the better of things in the early stages.

And on 57 minutes it looked as if Matlock would be hard pressed to gain maximum points as Davies was ruled by referee Matthew Walsh to have headbutted Chris Bolder and was instantly red carded by the official.

Yet in another twist, Matlock were soon back in front as by the 59th minute, James Knowles had fooled Turner on the goal line just outside the box, before looking up and chipping a delicious cross over the stranded Wilson for Morris to score with a close range header.

Hannah and sub Dene Cropper both had late chances to add to the tally, while Bradshaw nearly levelled but saw Adam Sollitt dive well to his left to keep the ball out, as Matlock held on for a vital victory.
