They’re still up for the cup

Manor Pharmacy Matlock and District League round-up

by Drew Robertson

The quest for the 105-year-old historical Cavendish Cup continued with enthralling encounters for Matlock & District Football League teams.

It was The King’s Arms, Riddings Rovers, Laburnum Saints and Woodthorpe Rovers who were gleaming and still dreaming of getting their hands on the coveted trophy after victories.

Crich’s Kings completed the first-round action with a double strike from Craig Merritt and another from Luke Mason to earn their progression over Tibshelf.

Second-round action brought delight for Riddings Rovers, convincing 4-2 home winners over Hilcote United. Two goals came from Shane Buckerfield with other successes from Tom Wilson and Arthur Gugala. Daniel Fisher and Daniel Ryan, the leading goalscorer on 22, netted for the visitors.Laburnum Saints hit visitors Darley Dale Lions for six with strikes from Michael Charlton, Matt Haywood, Matt Warren, Pete Denton and Andy Clifton in a 6-4 action-packed match which saw Lions defeated despite goals from Liam Keeton, Mark Ashton, Matt Allsop and Gaz Whitworth.

It was a tetchy affair as Steven Fox’s Woodthorpe Rovers beat former club AFC Lea Holloway 7-2, with goals from Matt Walsh (two), Gaz Siddall (two), Ben Bower, Carl Whitford and an own goal. Visitors Holloway, angered by behaviour from fans, replied with Adam Flint and Adam Suett.

League action saw wins for Shirland Miners Welfare, Wirksworth Albion and Matlock Town Youth. Tansley worked hard on their pitch prior to their 5-1 home defeat by Shirland. Chris Toplis scored for Tansley.

David Ward, Craig Wheeldon and Josh Vallance hit the back of the net for Wirksworth Albion who made hard work of their 3-1 home win over Harvey’s Bar, whose Dave Armshaw struck for the visitors. Black Hippo conceded Matlock ‘played really well’ and, despite their efforts, were beaten 4-1 by the ‘better team’ thanks to Callum Lytham (two), Ben Nadin and Jordan West, which lifted them to third in the table. Saturday sees the first Manor Pharmacy semi-final between Laburnum Saints and Tibshelf. Cavendish Cup second round action involves The Kings Arms v Wirksworth Albion.

League encounters include Harveys Bar v Shirland Miners Welfare, Darley Dale Lions v AFC Lea Holloway, Black Hippo v Woodthorpe Rovers, Hilcote United v Tansley and Riddings Rovers v Matlock Town Youth.
