Matlock Town Under 19s made themselves very, very proud, along with their families, friends and the folk of Matlock who supported them, against Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Youth Cup last week.

The Young Gladiators were represented by the Under 18 element (averaging just 16 years and months) and left the pitch to a standing ovation.

In the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup, the crowd of over 150 were certainly entertained. The Gladiators took on the might of Kidderminster Harriers, an Academy Squad who train Monday to Friday, while atlock train 7.30pm to 8.30pm each Monday night at Cavendish Fields.

Kidderminster left knowing they had been in a game of football. Both teams worked really hard in a well-mannered and extremely skilful and competitive match.

Kidderminster scored on two minutes from a header delivered from a corner kick. A second came from a back pass on six minutes, and a third from a bounce from a fantastic save on just 11 minutes.

Then from 15 minutes into the game, Matlock found their footing, and took the game to Kidderminster in a thrilling game of football.

At 70 minutes Kidderminster scored a fourth, and that was it. Undeterred, Matlock continued to play fantastic football and graduated with honours.

When whistle blew, Matlock were victorious in defeat. To a man, the Young Guns congratulated Kidderminster for a hard fought-match, and the officials, then joined together in a round in the centre of the pitch and celebrated their momentous performance.

The team believe in, and very much respect, the methods employed by Mick Bulheller, ably supported by Nigel Evans and Andy Baker, who very much apppreciate all the support given by the players’ families and friends, in addition to the support given by the local football managers, such as Bob Evans and Steve Wooliscroft, who realise how developing the under 19 team is crucial for local football.

Matlock Town U19s are in the process of looking for sponsors in helping with running costs, and in buying new tracksuits.
