it’s that time of the year again when we shine the spotlight on sporting excellence in the Derbyshire Dales.
Following the success of the inaugural Matlock Mercury Sports Awards, we are running the competition again this year and the time has come for you to get your thinking caps on and cast your votes.
Last year’s awards proved to be a roaring success as your nominations came flooding in.
Winner of the best sporting male was Matlock Cricket Club’s inspirational all rounder Peter Camm with ace archer Andrew Randall as runner-up.
Best sporting female was talented triathlete Christine Howard with rising hockey and cricket star Nina Smedley as runner up.
Young sportsperson of the year went to Matlock Cycling Club’s Arthur Green, closely followed by Matlock Cricket Club’s Harvey Hosein and team of the year was Wirksworth Colts Girls under 10s with High Peak Kyokushin Karate Club second.
Finally, Chris Whittall won the unsung hero title for his 25-year association with Wirksworth Colts FC. The runners-up were Kev Lawley of Middleton and Wirksworth Freestyle Wrestling Club and Andy Baker of Matlock Town under 19s.
This area is blessed with an abundance of talented amateur sportsmen, sportswomen and clubs, covering the whole spectrum of sports and games. So we feel it is only right to celebrate the rich tapestry of sporting life in our thriving area again.
This is your opportunity to shine the spotlight of recognition on your chosen individual or team as you can nominate whoever you consider the area’s best sporting star to be, not to mention the most deserving team.
But it’s not just about those at the sharp end who compete week in, week out. The area is also packed with dedicated coaches, supporters, parents and benefactors who go out of their way to help others and ensure our sporting scene remains so healthy and thriving so we want to salute them too.
