Matlock advanced to four wins from the last five matches at the Lido last Sunday with a deserved and controlled 14-6 victory against Leicestershire’s Hinckley Hornets.
Although a physical game with a few verbal exchanges, this contest did pleasingly not repeat the levels of unsportsmanship displayed at the corresponding away fixture last month.
A well-prepared Matlock side started badly and went a goal behind before recovering very well and putting together some excellent moves that led to a 5-1 lead going into the second quarter.
The away side staged a bit of a comeback in the third session which led to Matlock coach Richard Sellors firmly emphasising a guard against complacency in the final period.
Main scorers for Matlock included Jim Evans, Richard Flint and Andy Massey with five, four and three goals respectively.
Richard Massey capped an excellent defensive sweeping up display with two goals to complete the scoring.
Youngsters Tom Illingworth and Will Fry completed four superb breaking swims between them that led to goals and in doing so underlined the improvement that is being seen throughout the whole unit.
Tuesday’s away game at Leander (21st) represents a further test and indication of progress.
