A SIZEABLE contingent from Buxton & District Athletic Club travelled to Alsager in Cheshire to compete in the very popular five-mile road race on Sunday.
Held on a fast and flat, two-lap course, this year’s event saw a close finish between Matthew Hines (NYAC) and Ben Fish (Blackburn Harriers), both recording exactly the same time of 23 minutes and 57 seconds.
Emma Wentworth led the Buxton runners home in a creditable time of 35:58, closely followed by Frank Golden (36:21), Sheila Bradley (37:17 and third over-55), Emma Havenhand (39:23), Bev Golden (40:17), Rachel Dowle (47:33), Clare Bradshaw (49:24) and Sharon Millner (52:26). Also from Buxton was EmmaJo Harrison, who finished in 46:33.
Meanwhile, on the fells at the Lad’s Leap Fell Race held out of Crowden, near Glossop, Rob White was the first Buxton AC runner home, finishing a fantastic tenth from a field of 130.
He was followed by Darran Hawkins (15th), Pete Bailey (65th), Dave Forshaw (75th), evergreen supervet Bill Alsop (108th) and Helen Brunt (116th).
Ex-Buxton AC member Rick Houghton, now running for Macclesfield Harriers, finished seventh, while Buxton-based Claire Belkadi, competing in her first-ever fell race, was 114th.
Some of the younger club members ran away with first, second and third positions in the junior event at Lad’s Leap, with Jacob Buckley, Will Tighe and James Tighe making up the ‘dream team’.
